The Japanese holding company Sega Sammy Holdings is close to completing the acquisition of the Finnish Rovio Entertainment. The European company is best known for its Angry Birds mobile game franchise.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal could be announced as early as next week. The amount of the purchase will be around $1 billion. In January of this year, Bloomberg spoke about Israel Playtika Holdings’ offer for €750 million.
Rovio released the Angry Birds mobile game in 2009. The app became a hit and was the first mobile game to cross the billion download threshold. Following the popularity of Angry Birds, the Finnish developer subsequently released several “angry birds” animated series, two full-length cartoons, and several sequels.
In February this year, Rovio removed the classic version of the game from Google Play to increase user interest in other company projects.
