DirectStorage accesses game files without buffering, which compensates for the time spent searching for data, but makes it unsuitable for traditional hard drives.

However, the new update allows GPUs to access data directly from hard drives and instantly unzip compressed game assets.

Game developers can also get feedback on whether their games are using the CPU or GPU to decompress, ensuring performance is not affected by incompatible compression algorithms. The update also streamlined hardware requirements, initially only supporting NVMe drives, then AHCI (SATA) drives, and now traditional hard drives.
