The group’s aim is to work with industry to develop artificial intelligence that will make the country competitive on a global scale and to improve the security and reliability of such systems.

The team will report directly to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Technology and will receive a chairperson as early as summer 2023. Funding comes from the UK budget, which includes around $1.1 billion for supercomputer development and specialized AI research.

Note that the country’s authorities do not hide their ambitions: the UK wants to have “sovereign” artificial intelligence technologies that will stimulate the economy and avoid ethical and technical problems.

However, the UK already has a significant presence in AI to some extent. For example, the Google DeepMind team, headquartered in London, is engaged in cutting-edge artificial intelligence research.
