Brave Search, the developer of the privacy-focused web browser and search engine, has stopped offering API query results through Microsoft’s Bing in its products. And while the company says it’s all down to a lack of demand for Bing, experts suspect it could be the cost of using the technology, which Microsoft raised the price of a few months ago.

Brave has dropped Microsoft Bing Search in its products

“Every web search result displayed on Brave Search is now served by our own search index, we have removed all Bing API requests from search results,” the company says (quoted by The Verge).

This message comes just a few months after Microsoft introduced higher fees for third parties using its search API protocols. Following the news, Brave accounts described the price increase as “unprecedented.”

Now Brave claims that Bing’s rejection is due to a different reason: Bing’s broadcast was used in only 7% of requests. But it’s important to understand that at the time of Brave Search’s inception in 2021, third-party SERPs on the platform were only 13% (meaning Bing SERPs made up more than half).

Now, without Bing, Brave’s search will rely entirely on its own search protocol, at least it will work by default.

At the same time, the company makes a reservation in its message: those users who believe that Brave does not yet provide high-quality relevant results can still add Google search results to their queries as an alternative.

Therefore, we are not talking about a complete refusal of the company to use third-party protocols, it’s just that the company preferred the Alphabet product, not Microsoft.

The developer positions Brave Search as “the fastest growing search engine since Bing.” Average daily requests reach 22 million. The company is also working on creating its own AI search engine.
