The name of the celestial body is not remarkable – 2006 HV5. The asteroid is about 300 m in diameter and was 2.4 million km from Earth at the time of approach. The scientists used the Goldstone radar in California to record the optical rendezvous and correct the asteroid’s trajectory.
According to experts, the next time an asteroid will approach Earth from the same distance is only in April 2081.
Recall that in early March 2023, experts from the University of Alicante in Spain discovered that the asteroid Didymos was spinning near its equator fast enough to hurl debris.
Such studies help scientists better understand the dynamics of asteroids and assess the risks of their approach to Earth to avoid potential hazards.
