Dr. Geoffrey Hinton left his position at Google after more than a decade with the company. Explaining his actions, the scientist spoke about the risks of the expansion of artificial intelligence and shared pessimistic forecasts about the fate of humanity.
A pioneer in artificial intelligence research, dubbed the “godfather of AI” by the media, Geoffrey Hinton resigned from Google. He explained this move as a desire to be more open about the potential dangers of technology.
Geoffrey Hinton has spent his entire life working with artificial intelligence, beginning to study the subject back in the 1970s. For the past ten years he has been working on machine learning algorithms at Google, but is now officially retired of the company and was interviewed by The New York Times.
The scientist believes that humanity has already begun to face the negative consequences of the expansion of artificial intelligence. Hinton cites the blurring of the concept of “truth” due to the images and videos generated, as well as the loss of jobs, among the pressing issues. He also expressed concern about the ongoing arms race, which is now fueled by the introduction of artificial intelligence.
Now, according to the scientist, everything will get worse. “I console myself like this: if I hadn’t done it, someone else would have done it,” Hinton sums up his career.
