A change announced by Microsoft in February — Open all Outlook and Teams connections in Edge — It looks like Microsoft 365’s latest major update has arrived. This news is troubling IT executives at companies that have to “digest” Redmond’s browser even though they have their own default browser.
IT and system administrators learned the news from Microsoft 365 admin center messages sent by Reddit users. One gives details: “Azure Active Directory (AAD) and Microsoft (MSA) account web links in Outlook for Windows It opens in a single view in Microsoft Edge, showing the opened link side by side with the email it came from.”.
Although the routine does not directly affect the configuration of the default browser used in Windows, Microsoft 365 ignores it completely. This is nothing new, as the company already uses this kind of “hijack” method with the Widget system and search experience in Widows 11, and takes users to Edge every time they click on a link.
What does Microsoft say?
In an article published on its support page, Microsoft justifies the changes with the following claims:
- To improve your experience between e-mail and browsing, allowing you to see both at the same time, in the same place;
- To provide a unique experience;
- Reducing task switching and improving workflow and focus by opening browser links in Microsoft Edge as well as Outlook messages.
In addition to the dispute, Microsoft 365 Enterprise IT admins are already starting to roll back deployed changes manually and individually. However, besides being cumbersome, the solution can leave many less tech-savvy companies with an added concern. See what to do below:
