Uniqlo plans to close most of the big outlets in Russia, Kommersant reports, citing retail property consultants. By the end of 2022, the company recorded a loss of more than 10 billion rubles. The retailer has yet to make any official announcements.

Kommersant found out which stores will earn on the sites of the former Uniqlo

According to interlocutors of the publication, the Lime store will take the place of the first Uniqlo store in the Russian Federation in the Atrium shopping center in Moscow. Gloria Jeans will open at AFI Mall, where previously the Japanese brand also had a point of sale.

Gloria Jeans confirmed this information, adding that in the near future the retailer’s points will earn at once on several sites, the former Uniqlo.

The Japanese retailer suspended the work of its stores in the Russian Federation at the beginning of 2022 due to the introduction of the Russian Armed Forces into the territory of Ukraine. During the year, the network gradually closed its stores in the country. As of January there were only 27 of them, compared to the 50 that were operating before the crisis.

According to the director of the retail department of CORE.XP, Marina Malakhatko, Gloria Jeans is the main candidate to fill the vacant places.

At the same time, as the director of the Fashion Consulting Group Anna Lebsak-Kleymans pointed out, it will not be easy to replace the brand due to the manufacturing capacity, pricing policy and quality of the company’s basic models.

In February, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that the exit of the Japanese brand would in no way affect the state of the Russian market. According to the deputy head of the department, Viktor Yevtukhov, local manufacturers “can perfectly replace” Uniqlo products.
