Chinese police have arrested a man who allegedly used ChatGPT artificial intelligence to create and spread fake news for profit.

The suspect, surnamed Hong, was detained after using a chatbot banned in China to generate and spread false information about the train derailment on the Web.

His fake news was viewed nearly 15,000 times before Hong was caught by the police. He was interrogated in Dongguan City, south of Guangdong Province, on May 5.

The police said that their actions led to conflicts and misunderstandings among the community. This incident was the first criminal case in the country regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

Note that the Hong case raises questions about the possible consequences of using AI-based technology to spread disinformation.

Earlier, Craig Martell, director of digital technology and artificial intelligence at the Pentagon, voiced concerns about productive AI systems, calling the ChatGPT chatbot “an ideal tool for spreading disinformation.”

And Hong’s case only confirmed that.
