In the UK, children were born with the DNA of three people. For its conception, the cytoplasmic replacement method was used. It’s already worked: In 2016, the world’s first child was born in the United States with DNA from two parents and one donor.

First babies born with DNA from three people in the UK

The Guardian newspaper reported the birth in the UK of the first children with DNA from three people: two parents and a donor. Conception was made possible by the cytoplasmic replacement procedure: 99.8% of a person’s DNA belongs to two of his parents, another 37 genes belong to the donor.

The cytoplasmic replacement method of conception is used to prevent children from inheriting mutations that cause incurable mitochondrial diseases that lead to impaired energetic functions in cells.

British scientists were the first in the world to start investigating the cytoplasmic replacement method, but the first children conceived using this method were born in the US in 2016. A Jordanian woman suffering from Leigh syndrome who lost two children due to a genetic mutation was able to give birth to a child with the DNA of three people.
