Wind power has become the UK’s main source of electricity for the first time. In the first quarter of this year, close to a third of the energy supplied to the grid was obtained from the operation of wind farms.
British wind farms provided around a third of the electricity supplied to the UK grid in the first three months of 2023, the BBC reports, citing a report from Imperial College London.
Along with power from ‘windmills’, solar power generation has grown in the UK. According to the TV channel, 42% of the electricity generated in the first quarter of this year came from renewable energy sources and only 33% from traditional fossil fuels such as gas and coal.
The UK’s transition to carbon neutral energy is being hampered by capacity shortages in the electricity supply system. Some projects with solar and wind power plants, estimated at billions of pounds, will have to wait up to 15 years for implementation, the channel notes.
Earlier, UK authorities said they would aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 20235.
