Instead of traditional oscillators, the prototype uses tuned metal forks to create custom foundations and overtones.

Because sound reproduction is based on an acoustic resonator, it has certain qualities that a conventional synthesizer lacks. For example, it will “sound like a guitar when held near an amplifier and play when hit from the side”.

Thanks to magnets inside the instrument, it can support a root note or both root and upper tones, which can be modulated with an LFO for a variety of sonic manipulations. For now, while phase5 remains a prototype, Korg Berlin is evaluating interest in this hybrid acoustic synthesizer. If demand is sufficient, the company will explore further development for a potential finished product.
