Last year, Tesla unveiled a second-generation Tesla Bot prototype that even needed help getting around. Then a video released in March showed two of these robots moving around a room by themselves and using power tools. In the latest video, a group of five Optimus robots “gracefully” move through the Tesla workshop where they prepare to assemble the Cybertruck pickup truck.
The demonstration showed some of the impressive features of the robots: they went through the power calibration process, cracked a chicken egg and kept its contents intact, and created digital maps from a point cloud by scanning and remembering their surroundings.
Robot training for manipulating objects involves a human dressed in a special suit – the robot follows a person’s movements to learn the optimal manipulation technique. In addition, the robots demonstrated maneuvering along complex trajectories and working with fragile objects of complex shape.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk estimates they will cost around $20,000 and will use the same AI system used in Tesla electric vehicles.
