RIA Novosti reports that researchers from Belgorod State National Research University have created and patented a method for correcting a person’s psychological state using virtual reality (VR).

VR is already widely used in the treatment of mental illness. Basically, a person is affected by the observation or interaction with the plot itself. Russian scientists decided to influence the boundaries of the surrounding reality and how predictably they changed. Scientists note that the positioning system in space is activated when the brain is moving in VR.

Study participants were shown a series of individually selected frames for each. The researchers tracked changes in indicators of the brain’s functional activity as they moved in a particular area. The method developed by scientists affects the entorhinal cortex, which is “responsible” for depression and has high neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to change under the influence of experience, which is especially affected by depression.

After the VR session, the researchers assessed the patients’ mental and physical state using questionnaires, measuring heart rate and blood pressure, as well as examining the level of oxygen saturation in the blood. According to the developers, their method reduces rehabilitation time and effectiveness.
