Researchers have found more than 100 genes associated with this disease risk. Most interestingly, these genes are related to the development of the placenta, the organ that nourishes the baby’s brain during its development in the mother’s womb.

One of the scientists involved in the study, Dr. Daniel Weinberger explained that earlier his colleagues did not pay due attention to the role of the placenta in the development of schizophrenia.

Everyone focused only on genes related to the development of the brain and did not pay attention to those that control the placenta.

Thus, the scientific community was able to confirm for the first time that this organ plays a key role not only in the development of schizophrenia, but also in other diseases. It turns out that the state of the placenta can affect the risk of developing diabetes, bipolar disorder, depression, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
