After several years of delay and after repeatedly postponing its introduction, Google already has a specific start date for the end of cookies in Chrome. The company has announced a new phase of its Privacy Sandbox initiative, which consists of a series of plans to create new technologies for the online advertising market while maintaining user privacy. He also confirmed when large-scale testing will begin.

Google has confirmed that the final end of the use of cookies will come in the second half of 2024. However, until now we did not know when this process would begin. The company now claims that during the first quarter of the next annually plan to remove third-party cookies for 1% of Chrome users. All this as part of a large-scale API testing, available to developers during July.

The availability of the API, in particular, will serve “conduct large-scale traffic tests” so that developers can continue to work on their technologies, which serve as an alternative to third-party cookies, in order to learn the interests of users without compromising their privacy. Google, yes, states that “they don’t plan to make significant changes to the APIs until third-party cookies are removed.”

Later, in the fourth quarter of 2023, developers will be able to simulate deleting cookies for a limited number of users for such tests. We reiterate that Google plans to permanently remove third-party cookies for 1% of Chrome users in early 2024, and for everyone in the second quarter of 2024.

Google has been trying to remove third-party cookies in Chrome since 2020.

Internet cookies, Google

Google, let’s remember Chrome has been delaying disabling third-party cookies for several years now.. Mostly due to disagreements with advertisers over technologies that will replace this method of user tracking.

In 2021, the company stated that cookies they will completely disappear in 2023. This was a new date that should have “sufficient time to publicly discuss relevant decisions, maintain ongoing communication with regulators, and for publishers and the advertising industry to migrate their services,” they noted.

However, by mid-2023 Google postponed deleting cookies again announcing an extension of API testing, which we reiterate will begin in July.
