Yellowstone is located in the mantle region where hot magma columns rise to the surface. Scientists want to know what triggered the last eruption of this volcano because of its potential danger. Only three eruptions are known: Hackleberry Ridge – 2.1 million years ago, Mesa Falls – 1.3 million years ago, Lava Creek – 631 thousand years ago.

The latest eruption, previously thought to be a single lava eruption, samples were found east of the national park created around the volcano, and based on these samples, the researchers mapped the deposits.

During the simulation, it turned out to be a series of four powerful explosions, one after the other. Vent-like structures have also been found.

The relevance of the study is due to the fact that a possible explosion will occur according to the same scenario. For this reason, scientists aim to make a detailed study of the structures discovered and the boundaries between them. This will allow us to develop a more detailed picture of the Lava Stream eruption and perhaps understand what triggered it.
