The mathematical model developed by Russian researchers can predict the airborne spread of most viruses. The scientists’ work is published in the journal Mathematics.

Experts say that the basis for creating the model is research conducted during the COVID-19 outbreak. The researchers studied the spread of viral particles in the air, in the ventilation and air conditioning systems of buildings and transport, filtration from masks, the effect of partitions, face shields.

With this data, the researchers developed a model for the spread of viral particles. It is based on the basic equations of hydrodynamics. Modern numerical methods and computational power are used for the model. Experts tested their development on the example of a technological transport cabin.

According to scientists, their model is universal: it can be used to reproduce the behavior of viruses of all types, both in open spaces and indoors.

Ivan Panfilov, Associate Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Don State Technical University, noted that using the new method it is possible to obtain the trajectory and properties of each particle at any time. to account for their evaporation and interaction as they collide, and to evaluate the effect of velocity and humidity of the surrounding air. Thus, the expert concludes that it is possible to predict the course and effectively manage this process.
