A cellular satellite communications network for accessing the Internet and sending messages to emergency services may appear in Russia by 2035. Izvestia writes about this with reference to the draft strategy for the development of the communications industry for 2024-2035.

In 2035, a satellite cellular network may appear in Russia

According to the document, by 2030 a domestic constellation of low-orbit satellites will operate in orbit that will allow Internet access in certain regions, as well as the transmission of messages from mobile phones to emergency services if cellular communication is not available.

Five years later, a hybrid network will appear, covering all of Russia with the Internet and backup television. The strategy states that the network will be available on highways, in the Arctic area and on the Northern Sea Route.

The Ministry of Digital Development stressed that these are only proposals from the working group on fixed communications. The strategy itself is only developing. After discussing the initiatives, they will decide on their inclusion in the final document.

  • In October 2022, the Roscosmos State Corporation announced the launch of the Sphere project. The first Russian satellite for broadband Internet “Skif-D” as well as three communication satellites “Gonets-M” entered orbit.
  • The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, said that within the framework of the Sphere project, a satellite constellation of more than 600 spacecraft will be created. For these purposes, 14 billion rubles were allocated from the budget in 2022, 18 billion rubles will be spent in 2023 and 2024, and 8.5 billion rubles in 2025.
