We’re already anticipating it, Motorola’s new 2023 foldable model is indeed a significant advancement in the series. In this sense, in the struggle Motorola Razr 40 Ultra against. Razr 2022How is the first one different from its predecessor?

We analyze them in sections such as design, screens and performance and determine one winner for each of them, if any. The idea is that you can make a better decision if you’re looking to enter the foldable phone segment now.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra comparison. Razr 2022

Design

We’ve said it over and over again, the design of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra really marks an important difference and evolution from its predecessors, especially last year. For starters, the fold introduced this 2023 feels and looks good in the hands, both full and folded.

One of the complaints we had with the Razr 2022 was that it was difficult or awkward to handle with one hand when unfolded. The solid and pronounced edges were responsible for this position, as well as the fact that it was wide.

The Razr 40 Ultra is more rounded and thinner to a certain extent, as well as looking more “young” and available in a variety of colors, further opening up opportunities for different public profiles to see it with the intention of making it your first purchase in the foldable segment.

Winner: Razr 40 Ultra

screens

There is one difference or another in the main screens of the Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 2022, so we can quickly declare a tie in this section. The first one

6.9-inch Full HD+ display with a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz, meaning it refreshes its image up to 165 times in one second.

The Razr 2022 panel is 6.7 inches, also with Full HD + resolution. The refresh rate, yes, remains at 144 Hz. To be honest, only the most demanding will be able to find dissimilar details between one and the other.

The outer or protective shield is another aspect that shows the evolution of the Razr 40 Ultra. Just the boldness of the brand with this element is impressive as it goes beyond the main camera module. Its size is 3.6 inches and its refresh rate is 144 Hz, which allows you to comfortably and efficiently display almost any application without fear of, for example, “cropping” vertical videos.

The 2022 Razr includes a 2.7-inch splash guard that has a much lower resolution and response than the Razr 40 Ultra. In fact, with such dimensions, it is impossible not to open a cell phone to write a message or call a contact, although it has also been noted that when the smartphone is unfolded, the experience is not entirely satisfactory.

Winner: Razr 40 Ultra

Performance

According to the Chicago-based firm, the Razr 40 Ultra was designed using the finest components on the market at the time. Thus, the device includes a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and a configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, at least for Mexico. Although Qualcomm now has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, that doesn’t mean that this mobile will show up when people’s favorite apps are running.

On the contrary, whether you’re using an external or internal screen, there’s a smooth response to a variety of tasks, from taking selfies automatically to launching multimedia content.

Interestingly, the Razr 2022 also comes with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and 12GB of RAM. Hence, its performance is also outstanding in almost any requirement.

We have a slight suspicion that the company may have been able to bring Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to the Razr 40 Ultra, as it did to its high-end Motorola Edge 40 Pro. We think that this was not the case because the brand wanted to maintain a lower price, competitive in a team belonging to a category that in itself is impossible for more than one in terms of costs. This is just a guess on our part.

Winner: draw

Autonomy

The Razr 40 Ultra barely stands out in this section with a 3800mAh battery and 30W fast charging, while its predecessor has a 3500mAh battery with the same fast charging.

It is unlikely that any of the units does not require energy on a more or less busy day.

Again, the Razr 40 Ultra could stand out here, at least with the integration of a 4,000+mAh power bank and stronger fast charging. How much would this decision affect the final design of the device? Wouldn’t your cover be so bold? In short, this is one of the most sacrificed moments in both units.

Winner: draw

cameras

Motorola is accustomed to setting camera configurations that stand out for their MP in their high ranges. That is why we are surprised that the Razr 40 Ultra has placed 12 and 13 MP lenses for the rear module.

The Razr 2022 features a 50MP and 13MP dual camera setup. The selfie camera in both cases is 32 MP.

To be honest, we haven’t fully tested the type of photography that the Razr 40 Ultra offers us yet. Its little brother really delivers images that stand out for their level of detail and good color reproduction.

We already know MP isn’t everything in mobile photography, so the Razr 40 Ultra has yet to show that it doesn’t need to show off big numbers to stand out in this section.
