In New York at the Made by Google event, those from Palo Alto are finally there. Leaks about Pixel 8 and 8 Pro confirmed and they have officially launched their two new mobile phones.
Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro: design
In terms of design, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are very similar to their predecessors. However, there are some minor design updates this year, including more rounded corners, flat screens on both phones, and symmetrical bezels.
The Pixel 8 features a 6.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels (428 pixels per inch) and a 20:9 aspect ratio (slightly smaller than the 6.3-inch screen on last year’s Pixel 7). Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protects your screen and delivers smoother, more colorful images with up to 120Hz and HDR10+. It can reach up to 1400 nits of brightness (HDR) and a maximum brightness of 2000 nits for a superior viewing experience.
The Pixel 8 Pro features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and can reach up to 1600 nits of brightness (HDR) and a maximum brightness of 2400 nits. When Smooth Display is enabled, Google Pixel 8 Pro automatically adjusts the frequency from 1Hz to 120Hz.
Google has once again opted for a dual-tone design for both the smartphones, with glass panels on the front and back and metal frames. The Pixel 8 has a brushed metal frame and a polished (i.e. shiny) glass back. It is available in obsidian, walnut and rose colors. The Pixel 8 Pro has a polished aluminum frame and a matte finish on the back glass. It is available in Obsidian, Porcelain and Bay colors.
Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro: characteristics
The latest Pixel phones feature Google’s new Tensor G3 chip. Google says there are improvements to processor performance and battery efficiency, although the company isn’t revealing specific specs on what exactly has changed under the hood. The only thing we know for sure is that there is a new ARM V9 CPU cluster and “GPU improvements.” Google gets the impression that the G3 is an overall improvement over the Tensor G2, although we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on it to know for sure.
Additionally, both phones feature the Titan M2 security coprocessor to ensure data privacy. The Pixel 8 has 8GB of RAM, while the Pixel 8 Pro has 12GB. The former has 128GB or 256GB storage options; the second has capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB.
Both devices offer up to 24 hours of battery life between charges, and up to 72 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver feature activated, the same as last year. With fast charging technology, the 30W USB-C charger can charge phones up to 50% in 30 minutes. The Pixel 8 has a 4,575mAh battery, while the Pixel 8 Pro has a 5,050mAh battery.
Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro: cameras
Google Pixels are widely known for their exceptional camera systems, and the same is true for the latest Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Both phones have some improvements over their predecessors.
Pixel 8 features a 50MP Octa PD wide-angle camera with 8x Super Res Zoom and 2x optical zoom. It also features a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera with autofocus. There is also a 10.5 MP Dual PD selfie camera.
On the other hand, the Pixel 8 Pro has the most significant camera upgrades. Its rear camera setup consists of a 50MP primary camera with 2x optical quality. It also features a 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and 30x Super Res zoom, as well as a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The Pixel 8 Pro also features the same 10.5MP Dual PD selfie camera, but unlike the Pixel 8, the Pixel 8 Pro’s selfie camera supports autofocus.
Google is showing off many of the advanced camera features of its latest Pixel phones. For example, the Pixel 8 camera boasts macro focus, which allows you to more clearly capture the intricate details of small objects. Best Take is another new feature that lets you combine similar photos to create a take that includes each one’s best pose. Google has also introduced Magic Editor for Photos and Magic Eraser for Videos, which use advanced algorithms to improve the overall quality of your photos and videos.
The Pixel 8 Pro goes one step further with Video Boost technology, which promises to offer HDR+ and advanced color correction for a professional-grade video viewing experience. The Pixel 8 Pro also introduces a Night Sight Video option that lets you shoot higher-quality videos even in low-light conditions. Pixel 8 Pro also comes with the advanced features mentioned above: Magic Editor, Best Take, and Audio Magic Eraser.
Prices and availability
New Pixels with the new Android 14 will start shipping this month. The base 128GB versions cost $699 and $999 respectively, which is $100 more than the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
