Manzana will allow you to install applications from the Internet on iPhone from iOS 17.5. It was announced on March 12, but with the launch of the beta version of the next version of the operating system, it will become official. This is one of many changes the company has made to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which regulates incumbent corporations with strong economic and social power on the continent.
Feature availability in beta version iOS 17.5 This allows developers interested in distributing their iPhone apps over the Internet to conduct the necessary testing before the operating system reaches millions of devices when the final version is released.
Apple calls this “web app distribution” and allows developers to offer installation of their apps on iPhones located in the European Union directly from a website, such as an official developer. The company will offer a number of APIs that will make it easier to download and install software without using the official App Store or alternative sources. Of course, they must meet certain requirements.
How to Distribute an iPhone App Over the Internet Using iOS 17.5
In order for a developer to distribute their iPhone app over the Internet, starting with iOS 17.5, they must:
- Be a member of the Apple Developer Program and have been a registered organization in the European Union for at least two years.
- The developer must be in good standing with the Apple Developer Program.
- The app must have at least one million downloads in the previous year on iOS and in the European Union.
Developers who choose web distribution will need to tell the user what type of data they are collecting with their application and how it will be used. Never break the law regarding what you can do with an application distributed over the Internet, and follow local regulations.
Those developers who choose to distribute their applications over the Internet must pay a €0.50 installation fee every year, known as Core technology fee. This fee goes into effect once the app has been downloaded one million times within the previous 12 months.
