Corning announced the seventh generation Gorilla Glassan innovation and a necessary update to adapt to the needs of the 2024 middle class, which was already lagging behind the 5 model, which was already 5 years old.

This is Gorilla Glass 7i, which will thus be able to work on 10-12-bit OLED screens and much larger phones.

The terminology of the 7i is 7th generation glass (like Victus) and they wanted the name to reflect that. As for the “i”, it stands for “industry-leading innovation for intermediate devices.”

Corning says it can withstand drops of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) onto uneven surfaces such as asphalt, while comparable glass alternatives can only drop half as far before shattering.

Additionally, the 7i is claimed to offer twice as much (or more) scratch resistance than competing glass. The 7i was designed to accommodate a wide range of phones at different price points. Likewise, the focus is on sustainability, given that these will be mass consumption models.

Corning has announced that Oppo will be the first company to introduce a phone with Gorilla Glass 7i.
