Huawei announced the launch HarmonyOS NEXT, your new free Android mobile operating system which will connect all your devices. More than five years after the US imposed restrictions preventing it from using Google’s technology in its phones, a Chinese manufacturer has developed its own alternative. The deployment of the operating system occurs several months after its official presentation at the Huawei developer conference.

HarmonyOS NEXT is the first fruit of a project that leaves the dependence on Android behind. Trade sanctions resulting from the war with the US have forced Huawei to accelerate the creation of software for unrestricted use in its line of devices. The operating system completely abandons the Linux kernel in favor of own microkernel based on OpenHarmonyOpen source version developed by Huawei.

According to the manufacturer, this new unified architecture offers Improve performance by up to 30% and power consumption by 20%compared to its predecessor. HarmonyOS NEXT uses Huawei mobile services and Compatible with Android apps via ARK compiler. Perhaps the most important thing about the new operating system is that it will be used not only on mobile devices, but also on tablets, smartwatches, TVs, etc.

Huawei says goodbye to Android forever

From a practical point of view, HarmonyOS NEXT is not a radical leap from the current version of Huawei mobile phones. The operating system offers features similar to what we see in Androidsuch as an icon-based interface, image or video editing apps, 3D emoji, or an artificial intelligence assistant.

Since it is an operating system for multiple devices, Huawei has tried to keep unified layout regardless of screen size. Some features are inspired by features we see from brands like Apple, such as the ability to transfer data or even make a video call between devices with just one tap. Others borrow Android’s level of customization, such as smart wallpaper settings.

Huawei doesn’t want to fall behind in the artificial intelligence race, and HarmonyOS integrates a smart assistant called Xiaoyi, based on the Pangu model. The user can access it through the toolbar or call it using a voice command. Xiaoyi answers questions about what you see on the screen, sets reminders, and can recognize documents and graphics.

Other features of the new operating system include an updated security suite called Starshield, which promises high levels of data protection and privacy settings. Like Android, HarmonyOS NEXT lets you manage permissions on a per-app basis to reduce the risk of data leaks. According to Huawei, apps that do not meet security requirements cannot be installed on a mobile phone.
