It took months for Apple to confirm what was an open secret due to new European Union legislation that will force all companies to use USB-C in their devices. Greg Joswiak, the company’s senior vice president of marketing, along with Craig Federighi assured in an interview given Wall Street Journal what the company will “comply with the new rule” and they will bet on a single reversible port across all their devices. They argue, yes, not to be thrilled by the idea.

Joswiak assured that the Lightning connector is one of the most popular in the world, along with USB-C, and that Apple has managed to offer a balance between both ports. They did this, in part, by selling a USB-C power adapter. So the user can charge their iPhone with the included USB-C to Lightning cable and let others charge their devices through the same adapter. However, they argue that they must comply with current legislation.without detail, yes, if the iPhone 15 arrives with a USB-C connector.

Joswiak also confirmed that Apple and European Union lawmakers faced “little controversy” over this new measure. He claims that while the EU’s intentions are good, they don’t believe including the USB-C connector as a single port is the solution. They also emphasize that they have already tried it with the now obsolete micro USB. As a reminder, a new measure agreed by the European Union establishes that all companies must switch to a USB-C port by 2024.

All Apple products will switch to USB-C in the coming months

Neither Greg Joswiak nor Craig Federighi have confirmed if the iPhone 15, which could be announced in September 2023, will have a USB-C port. However, recent information indicates that the company is already working on an iPhone model with this port. Apple will also change other products that also have a Lightning connector to include a USB-C port. Among them are AirPods, peripherals such as Magic Mouse or MagSafe battery.

The latest product to move from a Lightning connector to a USB-C port is the tenth generation iPad. A model that, oddly enough, is still compatible with the first generation Apple Pencil, an accessory with a Lightning connector.
