british company Bullitt announced a partnership with the processor manufacturer Medyatek to create The world’s first mobile phone to send and receive messages via satellite🇧🇷 Companies want to get ahead of their competitors by offering the device to the public in the first quarter of 2023.

Not many details on how the phone will work have yet been released – not even the name. The companies are calling the device “the first 5G NTN smartphone.” NTN is the abbreviation for Non-Terrestrial Network.

The difference of the device is to use satellites to send messages and allow the user to have a signal almost anywhere in the world. This is something the iPhone does, but only for emergency calls. Bullit wants to allow its users to chat using the system. The idea is that if the mobile does not have access to Wi-Fi or 5G, it automatically switches to direct satellite communication.

MediaTek is famous but who is Bullitt?

Those who follow the mobile news should know MediaTek, which produces most of the SoCs in mobile phones with a cost-effectiveness focus. The company has been working on the project for more than 18 months and earlier this year demonstrated the NTN modem in tests it conducted in a lab where it simulated a connection to a low-orbit satellite.

The Bullitt name may be less well known, but this company is also veteran in the mobile phone market. It is the manufacturer of ultra-rugged mobile devices for Cat and other brands. But the company also worked for Motorola, which produced the Defy.

Bullitt and MediaTek declined to discuss the possible pricing of their new phones, saying they will only arrive in Q1 of 2023 and offer one year of free emergency messaging.
