Samsung Electronics today introduced a new 200MP image sensor. It’s called the ISOCELL HP2 and thanks to its noticeably better pixel technology, promises to offer great results in the company’s next mobile phones. Going no further, this ISOCELL HP2 could be coming very soon with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which will be unveiled on February 1, 2023.

According to Samsung, the new sensor is capable of capturing much more light, detail, and offering higher-level HDR features. This is achieved thanks to 200 million pixels with a size of 0.6 micrometers; all included in 12mm diagonal. This size is quite popular among 108 MP sensors, but this time the company managed to place up to 200 MP. Thus, Samsung promises to bring larger MP cameras to other mobile phones without the need to take up more space in the case.

This allows consumers to enjoy even higher resolution on the latest high-end smartphones without having to install larger camera modules in their devices.

This ISOCELL HP2 uses a technology that Samsung has called Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG). In this case, the number of electrons in each photodiode doubles. According to the South Korean company, this allows for an increase in “total pixel capacity by more than 33%”, which means fewer overexposed photos and much more accurate color reproduction in bright light conditions.

As Apple has already done with the iPhone 14 Pro sensor, This Samsung ISOCELL HP2 is equipped with pixel binning technology. Samsung has called it Tetra2pixel, and it allows the sensor to simulate different pixel sizes to better adapt to different light levels.

For example, in the dark or in low light, the ISOCELL HP2 transforms into a 50MP 1.2µm or 12.5MP 2.4µm image sensor. This is possible by combining four to 16 adjacent pixels..

Similarly, the Samsung sensor will allow the following devices to record in 8K. “For fuller 8K video at approximately 33MP, the HP2 switches to 1.2µm 50MP mode to minimize cropping and capture more of the scene,” the company said in a statement.
