By 2025, roughly half of all Sonys first Partygame versions on PC and smartphones, according to a presentation to investors. For now, about a quarter of all Sony games have been released on these platforms, with the rest only for the two currently supported PlayStation consoles. That’s about to change, as the PlayStation 5 surprisingly won’t be the only Sony console with new games released until 2025; PS4 is truly a thing of the past then.
Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told VGC that this approach should reach millions of new players: “By expanding to PC and smartphones and of course live services, we have the opportunity to go from a dedicated presence to a full presence in a very limited segment of the entire gaming software market. “
The shift from Sony’s exclusive PlayStation-related content to the broader games market has been going on for some time. For example, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and God of War were recently released for PC. At the same time, a Sony game streaming subscription will be released this summer to replace the current PlayStation Plus model. The Xbox Game Pass rival also supports streaming to PC. In short, it didn’t come out of nowhere for Sony to expand its game catalog across different platforms. It may come as a surprise that the emphasis on mobile gaming is so great.
