Since the end of March, there have been rumors that Samsung Display is looking to shut down, sell or transform LCD panel production this year. Now, The Korea Times has reported that the South Korean manufacturer will shut down its LCD division during the month of June, about six months earlier than expected. The Korea Herald specifically mentions TV panels, but screens for monitors can be produced.
It is said that the company made this decision based on the sharp drop in prices and the associated profit margins of LCD technology. Display Supply Chain Advisors (DSCC) recorded an unprecedentedly low price index of 41.5% in April compared to January 2014, and analyst expects a drop to 36.6% in September. Also, competition from China and Taiwan sells LCD products at lower prices.
Samsung’s newest product, the S95B, uses a qd-oled panel.
Due to its attractive market position, the showroom is looking to shift its focus to oled and quantom dot. LCD department employees are expected to be transferred to the qd department. In addition, Samsung’s electronics business can, if required, supply LCD panels from manufacturers such as BOE Technology and AU Optronics in China and Taiwan, respectively.
