Nikkei said Taiwan and the European Union want to strengthen economic and diplomatic relations to work together to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain. Reuters reported that EU trade commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis and Taiwan’s economy minister Wang Mei-hua held official talks for the first time yesterday.

TSMC is looking into possibilities for a factory in Europe but has yet to make a decision. In addition to the $5.5 billion provided by the German government for Intel’s Magdeburg site, funding could be provided under the European Chip Act.

There are European companies that design and manufacture chips. Bosch, Ericsson, Infineon, Nokia, NXP and STMicro are the most important of these. The automotive, telecom and defense industries will benefit from this, but there are no chip manufacturers that can produce more advanced nodes smaller than 14 or 16 nanometers. The EU now wants to reduce its reliance on South Korean Samsung and TSMC by building a modern chip industry within its borders. Given the complexity of this market, it will take some time, but negotiations with Taiwan are a good start.
