Researchers of CloudSEK have discovered a unique ransomware of its kind: it does not demand a ransom in cash, but forces the victim to do three good deeds to help the needy. Is called good will
THE ransomware it is malware that can freeze the information on the computer or a server. The data is encrypted with encryption, which makes it inaccessible. The name says it all, ransom in English it means ransom: in order to get the decryption key and get his data back, the victim has to pay.
But GoodWill is not the same as all other ransomware. There is no cryptocurrency amount to pay. The only way to regain control of the computer is to follow the hackers’ instructions. It’s three o’clockgood promotions‘ requests:
- The victim has to donate new clothes to a homeless person, recover during the action and post them on social networks with the requested hashtags
- Accompany at least five underprivileged children to a fast food restaurant, have them order the food they want and document everything with a selfie
- Pay medical bills to people who need treatment. This last action – which is also the most expensive – must be documented with a sound recording.
All steps should be documented on social networks. “I became a good person thanks to a ransomware called GoodWill”. More than an actual virus, it looks like a gimmick straight out of an episode of Black Mirror.
And in fact, there don’t seem to be any documented cases of people being affected by this malware. It was most likely created for the developer’s mere entertainment, with no real intention of actually distributing it.
