As part of the Capital Market Day of Ampere, the new electric vehicle brand of the Renault group, Luca de Meo, CEO of the automobile company, announced the return of Twingo with a 100% electric and very cheap model.

It’s true that the French have already experimented with an electrified version of this car – Twingo E-Tech or Twingo ZE – but this time it represents a big novelty: its design pays homage to the first generation launched at the beginning. nineties.

The new electric Renault Twingo was presented on stage in prototype form. And although this means that its appearance may be changed before it even hits the market, the first impression was more than impressive. Clear strategy appealing to nostalgiaconsidering that the original version of this car was an icon not only in Europe but also in Latin America.

During his presentation, de Meo said that the Renault Group’s intention is to work on the new electric Twingo in record time to catch up with the production rates of Chinese manufacturers. Therefore, the boss promised that the car would go from a simple concept to a production model in just two years.

As explained, the Twingo will be a step below the electric version of the Renault 5 in terms of specifications and performance. Although the most important thing will be its low price: the French company’s intention is for the car to enter the market with starting price below 20,000 euros (not including assistance). In terms of size, Renault promises it will take up 20% less space than the average European car.

Renault taps into nostalgia with new electric Twingo

Of course, the new electric Renault Twingo will be a car designed for use in urban environments, although the manufacturer says that it was conceived as a model “without indulgences”. It is expected that its consumption will be 10 kWh every 100 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle..

Regarding its availability, Renault did not provide further information. However, if what the company is proposing is achieved: the car goes from concept to production version in just two years, we could see it in action by early 2026 at the latest.

As for the production of the electric Renault Twingo, it will be carried out at least initially in Slovenia, although Luca de Meo did not rule out using an external partner for its development. According to the top manager of the Renault Group, Its production cost will be 50% lower than the current C-segment SUV.. Its main competitor will be the Citroën e-C3, which will also have a starting price below 20,000 euros.

It is worth noting that during the Ampere Capital Market Day, the Renault group also announced its big ambitions in the field of software. The automaker is developing its own architecture in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm and intends to introduce artificial intelligence into its future cars with the help of a new virtual assistant.

There are still a few years left before the new Renault Twingo arrives. But the manufacturer believes it will be a crucial element of its vehicle electrification strategy. In fact, de Meo described it as “the silver bullet for sustainable mobility”.
