Electromobility continues to grow, mainly on the old continent. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), 47.6% of all new vehicles registered between January and November 2023 are in the electrified vehicle segment.. This includes both fully electric and hybrid vehicles. Without a doubt, this is great news.
On the other hand, it is worth noting that the electrified vehicles included in these statistics only regular passenger models. That is, freight vehicles are not taken into account, a sector that is also making efforts to move towards electric mobility.
ACEA notes that this figure represents an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period last year. In 2022, 43% of license plate registrations were for electrified vehicles.
The increase may not be noticeable, but it shows that the adoption of electrified vehicles in Europe has not stopped.
Another interesting fact is that many European consumers, having switched to electric mobility, I prefer hybrid models above all-electric. Registrations in the first category increased by 28.7% year on year.
Should we be surprised? Not much. In the electrified car segment today, hybrids are still cheaper than 100% electric vehicles. What’s more, there’s no denying that dependence on gasoline still gives some consumers confidence in their range.
Despite the above, sales of all-electric vehicles have also increased this year. In particular, from 15% in 2022, they accounted for 16.3% of registrations in 2023. This percentage is expected to continue this trend next year as more and more manufacturers offer 100% electric models that are more affordable.
Electrified cars beat cars with internal combustion engines
On the other hand, ACEA shows that in 2023 registration of license plates for cars with diesel internal combustion engines remained at the same level. This category accounted for 13.7% of total registrations in both 2022 and this year. Spain, France, Italy and Germany are the countries where diesel car registrations have fallen the most.
Of course, ACEA warns that internal combustion engine vehicles, both petrol and diesel, still account for a third of all registrations. In fact, gasoline showed an annual increase of 4.2%.
Information from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association makes it clear that Interest in purchasing electrified cars is growing.. Yes, the growth is slow, but no one expected such radical changes in the world of mobility to be adopted en masse overnight. This will be a process that will take a long time…
We also have to consider that the current economy doesn’t make it easy for everyone to purchase a new electrified vehicle. Vehicles are expensive anywhere in the world, and in times of financial uncertainty, many prefer to be cautious and protect their income unless absolutely necessary.
