Three US senators sent a letter requesting the US Secretary of Commerce to introduce a USB-C charging standard. They hope that the US will follow in the footsteps of Europe.
It’s about Massachusetts senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, whom we know from his 2016 presidential candidacy. The letter was addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gina Raimondo.
Senators cite the EU’s reasons for the charging standard: the ineptitude of multiple chargers, the added costs and the resulting electronic waste. His secretary insists that the United States needs a comprehensive plan to protect consumers and the climate from unnecessary chargers.
Earlier this month, the European Parliament decided to continue its plan for the USB-c charging standard. By the end of 2024, all small and medium electronics will be allowed to use only one USB-C port for charging. Its consumers will save approximately 250 million Euros and 11,000 tons of waste per year.
