Carry a Madrid metro and bus map on your mobile phone. This is already reality. The regional transport consortium of the Community of Madrid has finally launched an application with which passengers can purchase a virtual card to bypass the physical one and therefore pass their smartphone through the turnstile to use public transport. Application at the moment available during testing, although anyone can access it – that is, registration is not required. This will remain the case for at least three months, the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium confirmed.

However, the app does not allow you to link the physical map of the metro and bus. That is, in order to use a transport card on your mobile, you need to generate a new one. Luckily, it’s free during the trial period, so you’ll only have to pay for Metrobus 10 tripswhich is currently the only game that can be purchased.

At the moment, the ability to have a metro map on your mobile phone is only available on Android, and your smartphone needs to meet a number of requirements. They are as follows.

The Madrid Regional Transport Consortium clarifies that, first of all, It is necessary that your smartphone has NFC.. Additionally, the device needs to be updated to Android 7.0 or later versions.

On the other hand, you need to install the application Google Wallet (if you don’t have one) because you must have a metro and bus map on your mobile phone. That is, a new application called “Virtual Transport Card” only serves to generate a new virtual travel ticket and replenish it when it runs out, but the card itself will appear in Google Wallet.

How to install a metro and bus map on your mobile

If you are eligible and already have the new app installed, to be able to use your mobile phone as a metro and bus map, you just need to follow the below steps.

• Open the Virtual Transport Card app and click “Get a card and ticket”.
• Next, click on the “Multiple trip” option and select the title you want to receive.
• Then confirm the name and click “Pay”. You will need to enter a card which will be saved for future title purchases.
• Finally, it is necessary Save the virtual card created by the app to Google Wallet. Then all you have to do is access the card and pass your mobile phone through the turnstile, just like physics.

Please keep in mind that this is a pilot test, so it may fail at times. Therefore, it is also advisable to have a metro and bus map in physical format with you.
