SpaceX presented on Saturday (4): New spacesuits for the first private spacewalk in history, planned for the end of this year. These will be used by four crew members of the Polaris Dawn mission aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft.

A new extravehicular activity (EVA) suit was developed based on existing pressure suits worn by astronauts traveling in spacecraft. Developed to maintain mobility in different conditions. Produced with fabrics that guarantee thermal management, this fabric also contains materials from parts of the Falcon 9 rocket and space capsule.

The equipment includes a helmet with inner lining that serves as a visor to protect against sunlight, and state-of-the-art cameras. There is also: Heads-Up Display system that allows the astronaut to easily view information about the suit’s status.

As SpaceX explained, the fact that the spacewalk suit does not include a backpack offers a significant difference from the models used by astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). It contains energy, air and cooling, as well as other life support systems. will be delivered via an umbilical cable connected to the spacecraft.

When will the Polaris Dawn mission launch?

The mission, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, will also include commercial astronauts Scott Poteet, Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis. The group needs to pass Five days in Crew Dragon orbitIn addition to testing the ship’s communications system via Starlink, experiments are being conducted on the health effects of spaceflight and radiation.

The long-awaited spacewalk should be the highlight of the journey. It occurs approximately 700 km above the Earth and lasts for several hours.. The plan is to test various aspects of SpaceX’s new spacesuit, which is being developed with a focus on the company’s future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.

It was originally planned for 2022 and has been postponed several times since then. Polaris Dawn is scheduled to launch in the US next summer. In other words, if the schedule is kept by Elon Musk’s company, the Falcon 9 rocket will put the Crew Dragon spacecraft into orbit between June and September of this year.
