Robotaxis are now a reality. Not just because of Tesla’s promises, but as a vision for the future of personal mobility. Yes, the distant future, but given what was shown yesterday, quite promising for a technology that most major manufacturers view very favorably: autonomous driving. But beyond purely technological difficulties, Robotaxi’s biggest enemy is not its competitors, but Elon Musk’s contact list.

Despite all the anticipation surrounding robotaxis and self-driving, in the midst of a key election in the United States, the issue was brought up for discussion. It’s really not just autonomous cars, but also electric vehicles and their impact on traditional American industry. In this context, Donald Trump was asked in Detroit, one of the epicenters of the industry, his opinion on this matter, and he was, as usual, quite harsh: ban them from circulating in the United States. This is bad news for Tesla. and Elon, if he wins, of course.

There would be nothing more than another anecdote about the candidates’ positions if it weren’t for the fact that Donald Trump considers Elon Musk one of his best allies. Not just passively, but by participating in the former presidential candidate’s rallies and campaigning extremely actively on his X account, and in every one of the public appearances in which he appears.

Trump wants to ban self-driving cars like robotaxis

Plus, it’s not that Donald Trump doesn’t like driverless cars. The fact is that he directly wants to ban them from “driving on American roads”:

The strangest thing about this issue is that Elon Musk is actively promoting Donald Trump among his followers. when he is one of the most active candidates going against the interests of Musk’s main companies. It’s true that Trump is the only one who has spoken directly about self-driving cars, and it is unknown whether the rhetoric of another candidate, Kamala Harris, will go in the same or opposite direction in the heat of victory over the auto industry. the car and, above all, its employees.

Regardless, Trump has big plans if he wins the election in November and is inaugurated, and many of these plans are protectionist in nature and largely consistent with those of his previous mandate. directly attack many bases with which Tesla builds his future. Whether they ultimately come true or not is another story, but the truth is that Donald Trump has so far taken the opportunity to sharply criticize many of the fundamentals of Tesla’s business, so far without any reproaches from Elon.
