Everyone tries to take except the car. Walk to nearby attractions. Use the subway whenever possible. Take the bus when travel is possible… and so on. Meanwhile, e-commerce has brought hundreds of thousands of vans to the roads.
The rise of online shopping has turned the package sector into a giant that cannot handle itself, so Amazon itself has had to build its own delivery fleets. Together they manage to maintain a difficult balance. Better not to buy, but the offers are juicy.
But if you can’t resist the urge to buy something, you should at least consider choosing a slower shipping option.. This may seem silly since Amazon offers free 2-day shipping for Prime members, and giving up that privilege might seem like a waste of time.
But believe it or not, there are some good reasons to consider slower shipping, let’s see.
The first reason, and perhaps the most relevant, is the environmental benefits. Transportation remains the largest emitter in the United States (27%). About a quarter of that is in trucks like the ones Amazon uses, and 8% is in airplanes.
In the air, Amazon makes about 160 flights a day with its fleet. Once those flights have made their deliveries, Amazon trucks often take smaller, less efficient loads to meet the two-day delivery time.
The more flexible you are with delivery times, the more containers trucks can pack, ultimately reducing the number of trips they need to make.
The study estimates that if a truck makes fewer than six stops per trip, it loses scale efficiency. And in terms of emissions, the consumer can drive to the nearest store and pick up the desired product.
Consolidation of supplies means lower fuel consumption and less environmental impact.
Now Amazon claims its shipping system has gotten so good that fast delivery is simply the result of a strong network of warehouses that are already stocked with products common in the area.
This may mean that you receive products quickly and at a low carbon cost, since the courier was in your area. and it was a logical delivery without harmful emissions. But even if that’s the case, there’s another good reason to opt for a slower delivery: the human cost.
Amazon workers are already working to the limit every day, to meet the demand for delivery. So imagine what two days of Prime Day should be like. Real hell.
Undoubtedly, there are human costs in shopping that are not reflected in the price.. The need to hurry is what brings these people to trouble. Any readiness to receive a package in a few days gives these overworked employees a respite.
Remember that Amazon makes a lot of decisions for you to speed up your purchase. This includes the assumption that you need two-day delivery. When you’re shopping on Prime Day, take a moment to change your default overnight delivery and explore slower delivery options.
It’s true that Amazon has more shipping options in the US than we have in Spain, but there is always the possibility of delayed delivery.and this week it is worth choosing the most distant date in time to make the delivery, for the benefit of all.
