On Sunday, an international consortium of newspapers published Uber filesan investigation into the years of the rise of the American multinational, focusing on more than 120,000 internal and confidential Uber documents produced between 2013 and 2017.
The investigation revealed several unseemly secrets and painted an unflattering portrait of the company. For example, executives’ e-mails published by newspapers clearly show that they were very aware – but also happy – of nature. illegal from many of Uber’s companies. Not only that, the research has also made it possible to lobbying campaign secretly operated by Uber in various parts of the world, including Europe and Italy.
The newspapers had not released the identity of the person or persons responsible for the leak. They hadn’t even said how they came into possession of the company’s confidential documents. Now we know what happened. The person responsible for leaking Uber internal documents has a first and last name: Mark MacGanone of the big names of the company between 2014 and 2016.
MacGan was the Uber Head of Policy for the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions – which also explains why most of the information focuses on Uber’s relations with European politics, while those with the US play a marginal role in the investigation.
It was Mark MacGann himself who chose to appear uncovered in front of the cameras of The Guardian, one of the papers that took part in the investigation and published the investigation.
I was the person responsible for speaking out and influencing governments. It was always me pushing a particular media story. I’ve always told people to change the rules because it would benefit drivers and create more opportunities for the economy. All this turned out to be a lie. We sold people a lie. How do you have a clear conscience with such a burden?
the former Uber chief told The Guardian.
