New research and analysis have shown that the megalodon was the largest shark that ever lived. The terrifying animal was up to 20 meters long, its teeth were the size of a man’s hand. Exams of the teeth allowed us to determine that it was the largest shark that ever existed, from about 23 to 3.6 million years ago.
The teeth showed that the levels of nitrogen- present in the cells can make us understand its location
of a living being in the food chain. This was possible thanks to nitrogen-15. The more it accumulates, the higher the animal’s place in the food chain. The tooth enamel therefore reported high levels of nitrogen-15 and thus also a place at the top of the food chain.
Their teeth are the only way to reconstruct some of the history of these creatures. It reports lowercase
pieces of organic material so that researchers can read the nitrogen on them. Then through exercises
dentists convert nitrogen into nitrous oxideso you can measure.
In this way, animals can be included in the food chain. It is divided into layers called levels
trophic to which the classifications of the various numerous animal species are connected. In the meantime, however, the
the fact that there might even be a shark bigger than the megalodon.
Our tool has the potential to decode ancient food webs, what we need now are the samples, we can do the same nitrogen isotope analysis and put together the whole story of an ancient ecosystem.
