To give life to the ventricle bio-artificial a team of Canadian scientists. Professor Milica Radisic coordinated the researchers. The organoid is made by growing three layers of living heart cells. Thanks to the 3D polymer scaffold, it is now possible to create bioartificial organs with functions close to the real ones.
Scientists allowed heart cells to grow around the liquid-immersed polymer structure for a week. Thus, a bioartificial organoid of the left ventricle was obtained. In practice, it is a hollow tube that uses electrical impulses to make the cells of the heart beat together by pumping fluid. The ventricle is a miniature with a diameter of 0.5 mm and a height of 1 mm. However, it is able to hold liquid in a bioreactor efficiently equivalent to 5% of a true ventricle.
Our model allows us to measure ejection volume, the amount of fluid expelled each time the ventricle contracts, as well as the pressure of that fluid. Both were nearly impossible to achieve with previous models.

For now it’s a ‘invention ingenious yet conceptual, without many features. These have yet to be clarified and better developed for the real applicationsuch as removing the polymer scaffold. Perhaps such miniature organs will soon be able to reconstruct entire organs.
