THE digital payments they are becoming more and more popular, even in Italy. The latest bulletin from theObservatory for Innovative Payments from the Polytechnic University of Milan. In 2021, digital transactions amounted to more than 327 billion euros, a growth of 21% compared to the previous year.
But the real explosion comes from payments via smartphone and smartwatches: they grew 106% in one year. All in all, the range of operators active in mobile payments – from Google Pay to Apple Pay, through Satispay – now takes 26% of the market.
Projections suggest that digital payments will be worth more than $3 trillion by 2030. In Europe alone, an increase of 64% is expected, followed by a second increase of 39%.
The rebound effect compared to the 2020 pandemic emergency is certainly an important component, but it is in relative terms that the growth is even more noticeable. In 2021, the penetration of electronic payments on household consumption even reached 38%, growing by five percentage points.
