Zelenograd Mikron will produce chips for Russian SIM cards. Telecom operators are already testing the software for them. Mass production can start as early as 2024.

The Russian plant “Mikron” will be engaged in the production of chips for SIM cards.

Today, the demand for SIM cards by domestic operators is 70-100 million units. The plant’s capacity is still enough for about 20 million, Kommersant learned.

According to experts, the Russian chip for SIM cards is necessary for the implementation of domestic cryptography in communication networks, which should eliminate the risks of stopping the provision of communication services and dependence on foreign technologies.

  • Russian manufacturers of electronics and semiconductors asked in February to introduce tariffs on imports of bank, transport and SIM cards in the amount of 50-100%. They worry that the current zero tariffs will encourage imports at the expense of local factories. Until 2022, suppliers bought chips from European companies, after the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, supplies stopped, and local manufacturers began to look for Chinese counterparts. Now Chinese manufacturers want to enter the Russian payment card market on their own, and not through the supply of chips.
