When the heart stops beating, the organs swell, constricting the blood vessels and blocking circulation. It is for this reason that it is necessary to act very quickly in order to carry out a transplant in which donor – deceased person. But what if this degeneration of cells after death could be prevented or at least delayed? This suggestion, almost typical of a Mary Shelley novel, was made by a group of scholars from Yale university. And best of all, in a sense, they succeeded in giving some of the life back to the organs of the dead pigs.

These researchers have already made all sorts of headlines in 2019 when they managed to restore blood circulation and some cellular functions in the brains of dead pigs. Naturally, the news was exaggerated and people started talking about the resurrection of the dead. It was not what they did, but still it was a great discovery, which they now went much further, repeating their feat in the rest of the organs of these animals.

This is stated in a study published today in Nature. It describes both the mechanism they followed and the results. Some were within expectations, but others they were pleasantly surprised. And the fact that they managed to restore even some functions that they had not even suspected before.
