An important environmental dilemma is that alpine glaciers disappearing at an unrelenting speed, leaving behind only rubble and rocks. Here comes the third edition of “Caravan of Glaciers”a traveling campaign promoted by Legambiente. In collaboration with the scientific partnership of the Italian Glaciological Committee (CGI) and the supporters Sammontana and FRoSTA and finally the technical partner Ephoto.

It is a journey consisting of 5 stages, from August 17 to September 3. The goal is to check the health of a dozen Alpine glaciers. First of all, the Monte Bianco del Miage and Pré de Bar (Valle D’Aosta) from 17 to 19 August. Then Monte Rosa di Indren (Piedmont) from August 20 to 22, to continue with the Himalayan Glacier dei Forni (Lombardy) from August 23 to 26. Continue to the Marmolada Glacier (Veneto-Trentino) from August 27 to 31. Finally, to conclude with Montasio (Friuli-Venezia Giulia) from September 1 to 3.

There will be excursions, press conferences, monitoring, artistic and musical moments related to the glaciers in each stage. An input to make you think sustainable future of the mountains and the planet.

With the third edition of “Caravan of Glaciers”, we want to return to providing data and concrete elements to ask the Italian government to press the accelerator to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, in line with the Paris Agreement (COP 21), and to adopt a climate adaptation plan to protect the areas and communities. Starting with the most affected areas, such as the Alps.

Giorgio Zampetti, National Director of Legambiente

The unimaginable bleed of the glaciers that we are witnessing is, in fact, just a spy of phenomena occurring on a much larger scale and requiring bold solutions. The decision to return to many of the glaciers visited two years ago is no accident: we have serious reasons to believe that the situation has deteriorated further than any rational prediction.

Vanda Bonardo, National Head of the Legambiente Alps and Campaign Coordinator
