In an effort to transfer users to TikTokInstagram has changed the way the video editor works Roll, short clips. Until a few days ago, users were free to download the clips created with the internal editor before being published on the social network.

The problem? Users used the editor to apply the special effects of Instagram, but then they didn’t actually publish the video on the social network. Instead, the videos thus created were uploaded to the more popular social rival TikTok.

The reason is that users tend to use theInstagram editor, which is much more advanced and offers several content customization options that are absent from TikTok. They prefer the editor, but not the social media itself: and in fact the videos are then published on the ByteDance platform and not on the Reels section of Instagram.

To curb this resource, Instagram has taken a small — and malicious — trick: users are still free to download their clips before they’re published, but in doing so, they’ll have to give up the video’s audio. Basically, in the gallery they get a stupid video.

To download the clip with audio, users are required to share it on Instagram first. For now, this limitation is only present on the iPhone application, while on Android it is still possible to download videos with audio.
