Researchers at the University of California (UCI) in the United States have made a discovery that could become one of the most requested therapeutic treatments by humanity: treatment for androgenetic alopecia, popular hair loss, affects both men and women around the world.

According to research, the solution to permanent hair loss is the scalp. SCUBE3A signaling molecule is so named because it binds to a specific receptor, in the case analyzed by the study, a population of functional skin units known as dermal papilla (DP) cells.

While the researchers already knew that these cells play a decisive role in the growth of the hair follicle, it was left to work to explain how PD cells came to be. – signal-producing fibroblasts at the base of each hair follicle – encourage new growth.

According to Maxim Plikus, professor of cell biology, one of the study’s authors, the team’s major discovery is that SCUBE3, which is naturally produced by PD cells, “It’s the messenger used to ‘tell’ neighboring hair stem cells to start dividing.this heralds the beginning of new hair growth”.

To test their hypothesis, the scientists administered microinjections of the SCUBE3 protein to mice with previously transplanted human scalp follicles. Before long, new hair began to grow in the bald areas emerging from the dormant follicles.

This places SCUBE3 as an important therapeutic target for hair loss.
