Saalumarada Thimmakka was born in Gubbi in 1910 into a simple family. On reaching marriage age, she married a local farmer, Bikkala Chikkayya. Unfortunately, they are not able to expand their family and have children, but together they manage to do something else, namely, they start cultivating the land, caring for their trees with great love, even when their resources are scarce. . Hence the expression “mother of trees”.
What can the two lovers do together? Together they begin to care for the trees, water them and protect them from various diseases and bad weather. It all started with grafting some banyan trees. Over time, the pair managed to multiply them, so much so that both sides of a four-kilometer stretch of road in Magadi Taluk, Karnataka, turned completely green.
