In a PwC report Spain come in worst countries in europe on the electric car adoptionwith notice suspense. Why haven’t clean cars arrived yet?

As our colleague Mario Erraes explained at Auto Bild, this report gives our country an assessment 2.3 out of 5evaluating aspects such as electric vehicle market penetration, infrastructure, chargers, etc. Full of suspense.

electric car It is destined to be the great revolution of our time: the elimination of fumes and their carcinogens in cities and on the roads would bring us great benefits in terms of health, quality of life and help fight against changing of the climate and destruction of the environment.

But the years go by, and electric cars still do not arrive. At least massively. What happened?

Slow adoption of electric vehicles in Spain

As explained in Auto Bild, there is no single reason. In fact, this is a real “perfect storm” that plays against these great changes.

First of all, we must talk about high price of electric vehicles. For the same performance, they are up to 30% more expensive than internal combustion vehicles. It is true that there are electric vehicles available, but they tend to have limitations in terms of speed and autonomy. They are designed to move around the city, but cannot replace a car that is used for everything.

According to Fiat, combustion engine and electric vehicle prices will equalize in 2025, but that is still a long way off.

Second factor slow installation of charging stations. There are few of them in Spain, and the slowest loading. The aforementioned PwC study shows that For every million inhabitants, we have 245 charging points. At the same time, 83% of them have a charging power of less than 22 kW.

The existing network of charging points cannot support mass adoption electric car. True, it is growing little by little, and if there were massive sales of electric vehicles, manufacturers and service stations would wake up and supply more. But today it is difficult to make a long trip in an electric car in Spain.

Third, the government’s action plan, which proposes direct assistance with the purchase of an electric car, not enough. Aid is scarce and the budget runs out quickly.

The status is suspended when the plan is reported. According to the “X-Ray of Spaniards’ Movement Habits” study by the Alphabet Mobility Forum, 8 out of 10 Spaniards don’t know what a Moves plan is.

Finally, we must talk about current unfavorable economic outlook. The great crisis of 2008, the pandemic, and now the invasion of Ukraine, which brought inflation and an exorbitant rise in the price of electricity, discourage people from changing cars and opting for an electric car.

It’s a perfect storm that lasts for years, and we still don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. electric car adoption it’s very slow in Spain, and it doesn’t look like it will change in the short term. The problem is that our health, and the health of the planet, does not wait …
