We will have to wait until 2024 to get the first OLED iPad. The news on Apple’s first tablet with OLED screen they are becoming more and more compelling. Apple has been in contact with some potential suppliers for some time and is also considering deploying a relatively innovative solution.

According to DigiTimes, Apple has already identified a potential supplier that would be responsible for manufacturing the OLEDs for use on the next iPads. It would – as has become clear in the recent past – be a hybrid OLED, which is composed of a rigid substrate in the abdomen and a second flexible layer (i.e. plastic). This solution brings significant benefits and would allow Apple to maintain a previously reduced thickness without compromising screen life.

Until today, we knew that Apple was in talks with two potential partners: Samsung screen and LG screen, both have been on the Cupertino company’s list of suppliers for some time. DigiTimes now adds a third name: Taiwan SMTwhich is already one of the suppliers of the mini LEDs mounted on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and also on the MacBook Pro.

At this time, it is unclear whether Taiwan SMT would be able to provide the hybrid technology requested by Apple. The supplier will probably first have to make test prototypes, which are later meticulously tested by Apple.
